On July 28, 2024, I posted for the first (and until today, the only) time on this website under the Sunshine section. I did it to encourage my friend Julie at the start of her cancer journey. Scared of the “C” word

I had a really hard time telling my high school daughter that I had breast cancer because we are all so scared of the “C” word. I knew she would freak out so I stayed really strong when I told her. I let her know I caught it early and that I was going to be ok. I think since I didn’t lose my hair it was easier because I looked the same. I did the genetic testing to make sure I did not have the BRCA gene and that took a weight off my shoulders. My daughters get upset when they find out their father and I have withheld information from them, even things from when they were too little to understand. Maybe some children want to be shielded from adult issues, but mine never have. They have always been hurt or offended when they've heard about things we didn't tell them about, like family troubles and such. I had been sick for MONTHS, with no real diagnosis, so it was almost a relief breaking the news to my children. We finally had answers! My husband and I sat our three boys down (ages 8, 12 & 13) and told them the news. We told them that I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
