Newly diagnosed. Meeting my team Tuesday at KU. What questions should I ask? What do you wish you knew sooner? I have ductal carcinoma in situ and mestactic carcinoma in one lymph node. Personally, I have always felt strongly that I will opt for a double mastectomy as we have a strong family history and I’m 46. TIA

Welcome! I think that's a choice I would be very comfortable with. For what it's worth, when I want some direction from my doctors, I ask "If it were your wife/sister/daughter, what would you tell her?" and they usually have an answer ready. Good luck with everything! What I wish I had known when I started was that I would come out of it with many positives. @fiercelyfiesty I also had Dr. Wagner as my surgeon and she was fantastic! Best surgeon I know. I really did gave the option to do a lumpectomy or mastectomy and with her guidance, I decided the double mastectomy was the right choice for me. I still stand by this decision.

On July 28, 2024, I posted for the first (and until today, the only) time on this website under the Sunshine section. I did it to encourage my friend Julie at the start of her cancer journey. Scared of the “C” word

I had a really hard time telling my high school daughter that I had breast cancer because we are all so scared of the “C” word. I knew she would freak out so I stayed really strong when I told her. I let her know I caught it early and that I was going to be ok. I think since I didn’t lose my hair it was easier because I looked the same. I did the genetic testing to make sure I did not have the BRCA gene and that took a weight off my shoulders. My daughters get upset when they find out their father and I have withheld information from them, even things from when they were too little to understand. Maybe some children want to be shielded from adult issues, but mine never have. They have always been hurt or offended when they've heard about things we didn't tell them about, like family troubles and such.
