When my mom got diagnosed with breast cancer it was the hardest thing for me to hear. The woman I look up to, my best friend, my hero, my mom, and hearing that she was sick was heart shattering. The C word, cancer, is a scary word because you always think of the worse case scenario, not knowing what the future will look like. When I was diagnosed, I felt the world around me crashing. No one in my family had ever been diagnosed with cancer. I didn't hear this being talked about in my community, so how was I "the unlucky one"? I knew of only 1 other Latina who had breast cancer. The morning of August 18th 2022 I felt a lump on my right breast. I immediately went to my OBYN's office to get it checked. They thought it was a cyst but to put my mind at ease sent me to get a mammogram and an ultrasound. At the ultrasound the Radiologist came in and told me he sees a mass and I would need a biopsy. I was terrified! A week later I had my biopsy. On September 1st 2022 biopsy results came back and showed I had cancer. Everyone copes with hard news differently. By sharing my experience, perhaps another kid out there may manage to give themself a bit more grace. Some general takeaways are that this journey is different for everyone, and there’s no right way to feel. Don’t be afraid to ask how you can best show up for your loved one; nobody can read minds, and it never hurts to ask. It's especially hard when you can't physically be with your loved one. When I hit the milestone of my 40th birthday, I did all the "things" you are supposed to do to celebrate, including a mammogram. The mammogram didn't detect anything out of the ordinary, but because I regularly performed a self breast exam (as a result of a scare when I was 35) I had found a small lump and they performed a sonogram and then did a biopsy. Physical therapy after treatment

Many breast cancer therapies can cause scarring, fibrosis, or musculoskeletal issues that require physical therapy. This is typically started with the physical therapist. As a partner, you can do these therapies at home. This provided needed post treatment therapy for my wife that was appreciated and brought us closer together. I highly recommend you learn such techniques to provide help and support. My wife videotaped her last session and we were able to continue doing the therapy at home.

I was diagnosed in 2023 with stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma and had a lumpectomy and radiation. Dr. Shook at St. Luke’s (South) was AMAZING and his staff coordinated EVERYTHING. I did my radiation at Menorah because I live close to that hospital and St. Luke’s radiation machine is at their Plaza location. The 2 hospitals work together so patients don’t have to drive far everyday for radiation.

I was diagnosed with stage IIIC Breast Cancer in January 2004, while 7 months pregnant with my second daughter (11/18+ notes, her2+,ER-PR+...although later determined to be hormone negative).
