cancer screenings every 6 months

My mother and 5 aunts have all survived breast cancer, 2 aunts have had breast cancer twice. As someone with dense breasts and high risk, I add an additional layer of screening by doing an ultrasound when I have my mammogram. 6 months after my mammogram, I have a breast MRI.

I had a preventative mastectomy with DIEP reconstruction. (Belly fat) 6 years ago when I started this journey DIEP wasn’t an option for me. Did lots of research and met Dr. Collins at KU, very happy with my results.

Hi @pkcg , Sending good wishes to you!! I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma Insitu, but it was like sand granules peppered throughout my breasts, so I had a double mastectomy. I was happy to have the double mastectomy so I wouldn't have to worry about reoccurrence. I'm so glad you're here. Take care!

I also was diagnosed with stage 1 ductal carcinoma and I had a choice between a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. I did the genetic testing to see if I had the BRCA gene and that was going to make my decision. Praise the Lord I was negative, so I chose to do a lumpectomy. Dr. shook was amazing and giving me all the information, but letting me make the decision. I had a prophylactic nipple sparing double mastectomy with reconstruction and silicon implants in 2018. I too wanted to feel as normal as possible after the mastectomy. However, my body did not like implants. I started experiencing random shooting stabbing pains in my nipple area that was difficult to describe to my physicians. One of the only things I appreciated about having breast cancer was the amount of research that has been done and the clarity of how to tackle this particular form of cancer. Because of organizations like Susan G. Komen and others, doctors have been able to know so much about this disease and the best way to attack. I chose to get implants after mastectomy. I needed to feel as close to normal as possible after going through everything. I had expanders in for a little over a year, and then had my exchange surgery in Jan 2024.
