I had to call my daughters (on FaceTime) while they were away at college and tell them the news of my breast cancer diagnosis. It was the hardest phone call I had to make to anyone during this process. They were very upset with the news but I told them to share it with their friends and family and utilize their support groups too. Told right away

I told my boss right away, as my treatment would be starting with a bilateral mastectomy and I’d be missing a lot of work. I knew going in and talking to him in person would probably be best, but I was too emotional at the time so I emailed. He was incredibly supportive and helped connect me to the various people I needed to talk to (HR, etc) throughout the process. As for the staff (I work in education) at my school, I believe I had my principal email everyone and let them know. My kids also went to my school, so I felt it important for everyo...

I had to tell my three kids over the phone in three separate phone calls. My least emotional child immediately began sobbing. My most emotional child said, "Ok." The third child split the difference. I did not see that coming! I encouraged them to share the news right away and I think the support of their friends helped a lot.

Men with breast cancer

When I first told people about my diagnosis their response was, men don't get breast cancer.... In my head I'm like then what did I get diagnosed with? But my actual response was to just lift my shirt and show my scar to prove them wrong.
