Hi, I had a double mastectomy and asked my surgeon to do a nipple-sparing surgery, provided she got clear margins. If she could not get clear margins, please take the whole breast. She was able to get the clear margins on both breasts. I still have 5% of my breast tissue because I have my nipples.

What did you wear following the surgery? I had mine 4 weeks ago and have to wear a bra with cut out nipple holes. I have 2 weeks left in the compression bra and finding a shirt that doesn’t look ridiculous is hard.

Hi there,

My surgery was 11 years ago and I wonder if things have changed. I didn’t wear a bra at all. I wore button up shirts until I had reconstruction a month later. Do you have to wear a bra? I’m not sure if you are able to raise your arms yet but I remember it felt good wearing tight fitting camis. Let me know if I can answer any more questions. I’m happy to chat anytime. Take care!

Hi there, I had a mastectomy a year ago w reconstructive surgery. You will want bras that hook or snap or Velcro in front. Tight fitting feels better. Also I suggest getting button down shirts/PJ’s and loose fitting elastic pants. If you need anything else, I’m happy to help!

It's obviously not the same thing as a mastectomy, but I've had a breast lift so my nipples have also been removed and then put back. I wore a front-zip bra like they told me to for about a week, but the zipper was uncomfortable and it was hard to get the zipper started while also using both hands to pull the two sides of a tight fitting bra together. After I'd had enough of that, I just wore my sports bras. I couldn't put them on and take them off over my head, so I just stepped into them and pulled them up. I did not cut holes out because my doctor never said anything about needing to leave my nipples uncovered. Did they say why you are not supposed to cover them?
