Not Feeling the Faith

I am not a religiously observant person, so I didn't lean into my faith and pray for healing. I was thinking more like, "What the F%^&!" I focused more on changing my lifestyle habits to heal myself. These were concrete things I could do, see and feel. I worked on improving my nutrition, getting enough sleep, de-stressing in more appropriate ways, and making exercise a priority.

I was a pretty spiritual prior to my diagnosis, but I don't think I was strong or the my heart was completely in faith. I am now so much stronger spiritually, after my diagnosis and going through surgeries, chemo, and radiation. My faith got so much stronger. I honestly can say that my strong faith is what got me through this difficult time.

I consider myself a fairly spiritual person but not necessarily religious in the sense of organized religion, but I have gotten more receptive to religion since my diagnosis. Maybe it gave me the hope I was looking for, or maybe I could just see that things were working out all right for me and I felt like it was all part of a plan.

I was very anxious and worried about recurrence. I remember when my surgeon passed me on to a Nurse Practitioner at Breast Cancer Survivorship at KU. I cried! My surgeon was my security blanket! I wasn't sure the next person would understand me or my situation. Would she be as knowledgeable as my surgeon? Well, my NP is AMAZING, and I pray she doesn't retire soon. I remember hearing that some patients feel sad when treatment finishes and thinking "No way!" But then I actually did get really sad at my last radiation treatment. I cried when I walked out, and I cried a few other times that day because it marked the end of being under the regular care of some really kind, caring people who were looking out for me.
