Support for Kids
If you are a cancer patient, in remission, or a survivor and have kids between kindergarten and senior year of high school, I highly recommend Kesem. It's a free summer camp that is exclusively for kids whose parent(s) have been affected by cancer and it gives them a chance to have fun and be kids again, as well as connect with others who understand what they're going through at home. They also do fall and spring meetup days so kids can reconnect in between sessions and to bring other new families into the community.
When I was diagnosed, my daughter (4th grade at the time) said the hardest part for her, besides watching me go through treatment, was feeling alone at school. Kesem gave her a place to identify with others, make lifelong friends, and invaluable connections to the counselors. The counselors are all volunteer college students (most are KU students) and they are the most mature, caring group of adults that I've ever met.
Now I'm on the other side of the cancer journey and am in remission, my kids are gearing up for their third summer at camp, and I proudly serve on the advisory board. Happy to answer questions that anyone has about this wonderful organization!
