OUR MISSION

We believe everyone impacted by breast
cancer deserves to feel supported and connected.

OUR CORE VALUES

Community

As social creatures, we are happiest and healthiest when we are living in a state of interdependence. Many studies show that cancer patients who feel supported and connected—that is to say, in a state of community—have less pain and fewer side effects from cancer treatment, and their cancers are less likely to spread or return. Further, people who offer support to others have better self-esteem, lower rates of depression and dementia, and lower risk of heart disease and cancer. We are better together.

Privacy

Breast cancer is a sensitive topic; we want you to be able to express yourself without exposing yourself.  All we ask from you to allow you to create an account on The Breast Cancer Club is an email address so we can verify that you are human.  After that, it’s up to you how much you share.  No matter what, we will never transfer or sell your personal information to a third party for their use.

Inclusivity

Cancer doesn’t discriminate; neither do we. Anyone with breast tissue can get breast cancer, and all humans have breast tissue. Our community welcomes all adults in the Greater Kansas City area of any gender impacted in any way by breast cancer, including those who care about someone with breast cancer or who are at high risk of developing breast cancer.

Equity

Breast cancer affects us all, but it does not affect us equally. White people are the most likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, but Black and Brown people are much more likely to die from it, and there are additional health justice-impacted communities for whom a discrepancy exists but the data doesn’t. The Breast Cancer Club believes everyone should have the opportunity to reach their maximum health potential and has woven the pursuit of health equity into our fabric. Additionally, we are proud to prioritize local woman- and minority-owned businesses for all goods and services, because we believe that talent is equally distributed but opportunity is not.

Convenience

Cancer is hard enough. Getting support for it should be easy. The Breast Cancer Club is a one-stop shop for free support, resources and time-saving tools for the Kansas City breast cancer community. Our site is AA-accessibility rated and translatable into over 100 languages so that everyone can have support, wherever and whenever.

Julie Rudman Profile Photo

Julie Rudman, Founder and Executive Director

Invasive lobular carcinoma, 2023

In the late summer of 2023, just days before Julie and her husband David were to send their youngest child off to college and begin a new phase of life, Julie was diagnosed with breast cancer at a routine mammogram.

She was fortunate to receive her treatment at the hospital where David, a doctor, practices medicine and to be cheered on by her sweet, knowledgeable husband and loving family and friends. But even with the best-case scenario, cancer was difficult, and all the while she kept thinking, “How is everyone else doing this?!!” After learning that most of the local breast cancer support groups were gone, she decided to form one.

A native Kansas Citian, Julie founded The Breast Cancer Club to offer free, anonymous, multilingual, inclusive online breast cancer support for the Greater Kansas City area. The website launched in June 2024.

Julie is the proud mother of three kind and talented grown children. She enjoys reading, baking, practicing yoga, watching football and walking in her neighborhood. She also loves modern design, houseplants, and all the dogs and all the babies.
